Natural bodybuilding dates back to the 19th century. Overtime the sport of body building has taken two different directions. There are competitions which do not test for steroids and these generally attract competitors that use banned substances to gain a tactical advantage. Today, the negative side effects of steroid use are well known. The second direction of bodybuilding that is catching a lot of momentum today is called “natural bodybuilding”.

A natural bodybuilder is an athlete that uses all of the techniques of weight training, diet, and nutrition but avoids banned substances by natural organizations and competitions. So what qualifies as a banned substance? Anabolic steroids, Prohormone, and Diuretics are generally outlawed from use by natural organizations and competitions such as the NANBF (North American Natural Bodybuilding Federation) and the NPA (Natural Physique Association).

Natural body building routines are a must for anyone that wants to gain muscle the right way. Why do some athletes work out the same amount of time each week and experience very different results? There are a lot of variables: amount of weight, machines vs. free weights, low reps, high reps, static etc. Finding the right natural bodybuilding routine is the most important factor to being successful in this sport. Diet is a close second.

Before selecting a diet, you need to know how the human body works. What are the functions of carbs, proteins, and fats? No matter what diet you choose, you will want to record the foods that you eat in a daily journal.

Supplements should not be the first option for a natural bodybuilder. You must prove that you can weight train consistently and follow a diet. Natural bodybuilding supplements are best used to help you break through a muscle-gain ceiling or to help you advance past a body building plateau. Several vitamins and natural herbs are complimentary to weight training and physical exercise but they are a complete waste of money if you are eating pizza and beer 5 times a week!
